Leeds United will open talks with Mateusz Klich over a contract extension as they look to tie the midfielder down to a long-term deal at Elland Road.

It had been reported earlier this month that the 29-year-old, who is approaching the final year of his current contract, is attracting interest from Premier League Burnley.

And, it's easy to see why they would be keen on the Poland international. That's because Klich was a key player for Marcelo Bielsa's side last season, scoring ten goals and impressing under the Argentinian.

It sparked a remarkable turnaround for Klich's career in England as he had been frozen out after joining from FC Twente and was loaned to FC Utrecht in January 2018.

But, he is now a crucial member of the squad and Football Insider have revealed that Leeds wants to reward the classy midfielder with a new contract that reflects his status at the club and also forces the Clarets to look elsewhere.

Klich was not involved as the Whites beat Western Sydney Wanderers in a pre-season friendly this morning.

The Verdict

This is good news for Leeds but it's something that they should have addressed long before now.

Klich was outstanding last season and it's no surprise to see that he is attracting top-flight interest, so you would have to question why Leeds didn't have an extension on the table six months ago.

They are in a similar situation with Kemar Roofe and it's a very risky position for the club to be in.

Fans will hope that Klich rejects any possible interest from Burnley and signs this contract quickly but if he doesn't then you wouldn't be surprised to see him move on as the Whites won't want to lose him on a free in 12 months.
