Leeds United are hoping to make a breakthrough with a deal for Ian Poveda.

It was revealed by The Athletic's Phil Hay that the Whites are keen to make a move for Manchester City winger Ian Poveda during the January transfer window.

The Whites saw Tottenham Hotspur loanee Jack Clarke recalled by the Premier League club this month as he wasn't given enough first-team opportunities.

But the hope is that a replacement can be in place sooner rather than later.

Leeds Live writer Beren Cross was taking part in a Q&A session with supporters on Wednesday afternoon when he was asked for an update on the 19-year-old, and he confirmed that he's set for talks today with the Leeds hierarchy.

He said: "Poveda is expected to be at Thorp Arch tomorrow (Thursday) to have a proper look around and hold some more talks with Orta et al.

"Also understand, he or someone in his family, has already been in the city this week for talks.

"Club still feels confident he will sign despite late interest from Italy and Hoffenheim. He would be seen as a first-team player, yes."

The verdict

Leeds United fans will certainly be hoping that this could be good news.

Ian Poveda is highly-rated and while he went to Italy last weekend to assess the facilities with Torino, it's not hugely surprising to see him assess his options before making a decision on his future.

The hope will now be that Leeds can do enough when they meet this week to convince him to be part of the Elland Road project.
