Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips has rejected an initial contract offer from the club as Aston Villa chase the midfielder.

It has been reported that the newly-promoted Premier League side are very keen on the player after he enjoyed an outstanding individual campaign for the Whites last season.

Boss Marcelo Bielsa got the best out of the 23-year-old in a defensive midfield role, with Phillips pivotal to how Leeds dominated possession and he was effective at stopping counter attacks too.

Therefore, the Yorkshire outfit are desperate to retain the academy graduate and it had been revealed on Friday that they had opened talks with the player over a new and improved deal that would see him become one of the highest paid players at Elland Road.

However, worryingly for the Championship side, Football Insider are claiming that those talks were not productive and that the offer is 'a long way off' what Phillips and his team want.

Whilst the Whites will resume talks ahead of the new season, they know that with two years left on his deal this might be their last chance to command a big fee for the midfielder.

The Verdict

This is not the news that Leeds fans wanted to hear, particularly after it has been revealed that Pontus Jansson is close to joining Brentford and Rangers want Kemar Roofe!

Phillips was vital for the team last season and you can understand why clubs from the top-flight are monitoring him.

Ultimately though, it's now down to Leeds. They will know what Phillips wants and they have to do all they can to keep him as he will be tough to replace.

But, if they simply can't afford it then they will have to consider substantial offers, although any sale would anger an already frustrated Leeds fan base.
