Ryan Edmondson is emerging on the radar of a number of lower league clubs, with the Leeds United forward currently not in the picture under Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds have recently added Eddie Nketiah to their senior squad to provide competition for Patrick Bamford, whilst Tyler Roberts is another option to come back from injury.

That’s left Edmondson down the pecking order at Leeds, with last season’s under-23 top goalscorer not involved under Carlos Corberan earlier in the week, but getting an outing against Ipswich Town today.

And, Phil Hay has confirmed in The Athletic Q&A (23/08) that the 18-year-old is attracting interest from Gillingham at a late stage of the summer transfer window.

“I know that there are lower league clubs interested in him, Gillingham being one.

“He's not in the picture under Bielsa at the moment, that's for sure, and he didn't feature for the Under-23s on Monday.”

Edmondson struck 19 goals for the under-23s last season, but Bielsa handed him only one senior appearance, using him from the bench in a defeat to Birmingham City in September.

Despite the Championship window being shut in terms of incomings, players can still leave, with the League One and Two window open until September 2nd.

The Verdict

In the eyes of many, the next couple of years are going to be vital for Edmondson and whether or not he can make the cut at Leeds in the future.

He needs to have another big season, whether that’s for the under-23s or elsewhere, with the general feeling that he needs some senior football to really prove himself.

For me, he’s a big lad with goals in him, so he should suit the lower leagues. Then, he can prove himself to his parent club.
