Charlie Taylor’s departure from Leeds United last summer caused a lot of controversy, with the Elland Road academy graduate turning his back on his boyhood club and opting for a move to Burnley during the summer transfer window.

There is no love lost between Taylor and Leeds’ supporters, which was evident in the meeting between Leeds and Burnley in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, where the travelling support made their feelings known towards their former full-back.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was brought to Elland Road to replace Taylor at left-back, but the on-loan Manchester United youngster has failed to make an impact, with Thomas Christiansen preferring Gaetano Berardi, the Swiss right-back, who often deputised for Taylor during his final six months in Leeds.

Berardi has featured in Leeds’ last six Sky Bet Championship fixtures at left-back, helping the Whites pick up 13 points from a possible 18 to move back into top-six contention.

However, the 29-year-old, speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, has admitted that Leeds need a better option than him on the left-side of defence, he said: “It’s not my normal position but like every year I try to do my best – every week and every session.

“I know probably this team needs a better player than me but I just want to play and do my best every Saturday.”

Berardi helped Leeds to a clean sheet on Saturday afternoon, as Christiansen’s side picked up another three points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Norwich City at Elland Road.

The Whites will be looking to maintain their magnificent form when Hull City visit Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Verdict

Berardi’s words are extremely honest, and ones that will divide the club’s fanbase, as the Swiss defender is an extremely popular figure at Elland Road.

Leeds do need a natural option on the left-side of defence, as Taylor hasn’t been properly replaced, however, supporters will want to see Berardi continue in some capacity in the starting XI.

The defender’s words are honest and will further enhance his reputation amongst Leeds’ supporters.
