Leeds United's promotion bid last season ended in disappointing fashion, and it'll still haunt some of the club's supporters.

It could have seen the club return to the 'big time', which would have led to a number of signings to help strengthen their squad in the top-flight.

In a Q&A on The Athletic's website, Phil Hay revealed that Leeds were targeting a promising Premier League duo if they were to have won promotion back into the top-flight.

"According to Orta, he and his scouts have a permanent XI of possible recruits which they update constantly. So will they be thinking about players they want to sign for the Premier League?

"100%. Reece James is one who I gather they would have gone for had they been promoted. I suspect Harry Wilson might have taken their fancy too."

James is now back in the first-team picture for Chelsea, and will be hoping to build on some impressive performances under Frank Lampard's guidance at Stamford Bridge.

Wilson headed out on loan to AFC Bournemouth from Liverpool, where he has hit three league goals in seven appearances for Eddie Howe's side.

So, the Elland Road faithful will be bitterly disappointed by this latest reveal from Hay, although they can't afford for their side to mope around this season.

They've started the season strongly, and although they've struggled in recent weeks, they look as though they'll be in the mix to win promotion to the Premier League this term.

This Verdict:

This will be a frustrating update for Leeds supporters to read.

They were so close to making a long-awaited return to the Premier League last season, and there's no doubt that they would have been good enough to attract some players with serious potential to Elland Road with football in the top-flight being on the table.

They can't afford to mope around this season though, and need to get back to winning-ways as soon as possible so that they can stamp their authority on their promotion bid in this year's campaign.
