Leeds United fall behind Championship club in race to sign Man United striker

Barnsley have placed a bid for Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher, the Sheffield Star reports.

The 20-year, who has two appearances and two goals for the England Under 20 side, has been on loan at Oakwell since January, and impressed the United youth setup whilst on loan, earning himself a new contract at Old Trafford.

He is yet to make his debut for the Red Devils since signing his first professional deal in 2015, but is thought to be among the hottest prospects there.

Fletcher was an important part in the latter half of Barnsley’s campaign, scoring in both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, as well as the League One play-off final as the Tykes became the first team to do that double since 1998.

The report claims that Paul Heckingbottom is more likely to make the move another loan deal, but will have to fend off Championship rivals Leeds United for the signing.

Garry Monk will be asking the hierarchy to sign him a goalscoring striker, as last season’s top scorer Mirco Antenucci was released.

Whilst nine goals and four assists was a decent return especially as it was his first crack at professional football, whether he is able to lead the line for a team like Leeds is unknown.

Barnsley fans, what do you think? Are you now favourites for the striker’s signature? How well would he fit into your team? Let us know below!
