Leeds United face battle with Celtic to land key target before deadline

Published

on

Leeds United could face serious competition in their pursuit of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with Celtic eyeing up a move for the keeper.

The Scottish giants are in need of a stopper after number one Craig Gordon was sidelined for three months with a knee injury picked up in the win over Hibs on Saturday.

And, according to journalist Alan Nixon, the Hoops are looking at Getafe man Martinez who had been expected to join Leeds.

The Argentinian has been on loan at Getafe but they are reluctant to let the 25-year old leave with their first-choice keeper Vicente Guaita heavily linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

Martinez signed a long-term contract with Arsenal and is highly-rated by manager Arsene Wenger and it appears the player could have a decision to make.

Leeds will only sanction the sale of Andy Lonergan to Sunderland if they can bring Martinez in, but the lure of European football with Celtic may appeal.

Brendan Rodgers men are facing Zenit in the Europa League and are on the hunt for a second successive treble domestically.

The Verdict

There’s no doubt that Martinez is a quality player and he will surely be desperate to leave Getafe in order to play regularly.

At Leeds or Celtic you would imagine that would be the case and it presents the player with a tough choice if it comes down to it.

Given the late timing it will be a big blow to whoever misses out as there won’t be long to bring in a replacement.
