Leeds United took a swipe at Watford when they announced their Under-23s' starting line-up, ahead of the 2-1 defeat to Hull City this afternoon.

The Whites' under-23s came into the game full of confidence following their 6-0 win over Watford at Elland Road on Monday night, although they fell to their first defeat of the season at the KCOM Stadium.

However, Leeds could not resist a cheeky swipe at Watford when they announced their starting line-up for the game on social media, following events at Elland Road on Monday evening.

Carlos Corberan named a strong side for Monday's 6-0 win, which included the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Tyler Roberts, Luke Ayling, Jack Clarke and Gaetano Berardi - all important first-team players.

This is something that Watford were keen to point out at the final whistle. The Premier League club confirmed the full-time score on Twitter and stated the defeat was to an 'experienced Leeds side'.

Watford were also keen to empathise that Alying, scorer of Leeds' sixth goal, has made over 100 appearances for the first team. The 28-year-old has missed the start of the season for the Whites as he works his way back to full fitness following ankle surgery.

Leeds picked up on this and could not resist a cheeky swipe at Watford when announcing their line-up for the game against Hull this afternoon.

The club's social media team were quick to point out that Corberan had named another ‘experienced’ side and that Ayling had made 116 first-team appearances.

The Verdict

While the cheeky dig at Watford is something that Leeds fans found very amusing, on a serious note, it's good that the club can use their under-23 side for players who need minutes and that are returning from injury.

The fact that Ayling was able to play for the under-23s again suggests that he can't be too far away from returning to first-team action, which is a major boost for the club, as he's been an important player over the past few years.

The young players will be able to learn a great deal from playing alongside the likes of Alying and the other first-team players and it will only help their development.
