Leeds United have entered into talks with Huddersfield Town over a potential move for midfielder Lewis O’Brien this summer after they missed out on Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, according to Football Insider.

It is believed that Leeds are in the market for a new midfielder this summer to provide some competition and cover for the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas. Marcelo Bielsa’s side were thought to be interested in a move for Gallagher but they have now lost out on that move to Crystal Palace.

According to Football Insider, Leeds have been tracking O’Brien’s progress at Huddersfield for a while now ahead of a potential move. It is believed that the Whites had been closely watching the 22-year-old’s performances last season in the Championship for the Terriers.

The latest report reveals that Huddersfield are set to demand a significant transfer fee for the midfielder this summer if he is to leave for Leeds. Preliminary discussions have now been held between Leeds and the Terriers ahead of a potential move as he enters into the final year of his existing deal with the club.

The verdict

This is a move that has seemed like a possibility for a while now and Leeds clearly feel that O’Brien is someone that can add quality to the midfield area at Elland Road. Bielsa would be an ideal coach for the 22-year-old to work under and he would be excellent at getting the very best out of him over the next few years.

Having already worked under Carlos Corberan, who is very familiar with Bielsa’s style of coaching at Leeds, it could be a seamless transition for him into the Leeds squad if he was to arrive this summer. The 22-year-old would surely be keen to make the move to Elland Road and get the chance to play in the Premier League over the next few years.

Huddersfield would be a much weaker side without the midfielder in their side and therefore they are right to be demanding the highest transfer fee possible for him from Leeds. It would take a lot of cash to bring in a potential replacement, but it is also important that if he is to leave that happens with enough time for the Terriers to bring in replacements.
