There remains a desire at Leeds United to conclude the season, despite the fact that a loss of form over the remaining nine games of the campaign could deny them a Premier League return.

Leeds currently sit top of the Championship table, a point clear of West Brom in second and, more importantly, seven points ahead of Fulham, who hold the biggest threat to the top-two.

Yet, a ball hasn’t been kicked in the Championship since the opening weekend of March, with a restart date yet to be confirmed.

Quiz: Have Leeds United done these 15 things in the last 10 years? – Yes or no?

It has been revealed that if the season is curtailed, league standings will be decided on unweighted Points Per Game, with promotion and relegation also retained; that would, of course, secure table-topping Leeds promotion.

However, Graham Smyth has revealed that Leeds’ players want to conclude the season, despite that looking like the only way promotion can be snatched away from them at this stage.

Smyth notes how Leeds want to win promotion the proper way, without the threat of an asterix going against the final standings.

In the remaining nine games, Leeds will have to play Fulham at Elland Road.

The Verdict

It’s a credit to Leeds and their players that they have this stance at a time when it would be easy to look to avoid the season restarting.

Marcelo Bielsa has instilled an incredible mentality at Elland Road and it is that mentality that tells you if things start up again, they’ll get the job done.

That confidence helps convince fans that this season will be different. Yet, you’ve got to admit a loss to Fulham might mean ‘squeaky bum time’.

Bring on the season’s resume.
