Daniel James’ move to Leeds United is off with the winger set to stay with Swansea City despite undergoing a medical with the Whites earlier today.

Leeds have been looking to sign James for long periods of the January transfer window, but Phil Hay at the Yorkshire Evening Post has now confirmed that the deal for the winger is off.

It’s believed that James had been in Leeds for large parts of Thursday, completing a medical and edging closer to linking up with Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-chasing side.

Now, a deal appears to be off, with Swansea seemingly the ones backing out of the deal.

The player, a full Welsh international, was keen to move to Leeds and had told Swansea that he wanted to go ahead with the transfer.

Failure to secure the winger’s signature means that Leeds haven’t added a senior player to Bielsa’s squad this month.

Kiko Casilla has been the only signing at Elland Road, with the goalkeeper arriving at Leeds on a long-term contract from Real Madrid.

The Verdict

Firstly, this is bad for James and a real disappointment for the player.

He will feel like he’s been messed around by his club and there is sure to be some disappointment at missing out on a move to Elland Road.

For Leeds, it’s a huge blow. They only chased his signature late in the window, so to have Swansea do this will be massively frustrating.

The relationship between the two clubs isn’t likely to be pleasant and their meeting at Elland Road later in the season will be interesting.
