The 24-year-old is currently a free agent after being released from Brazilian outfit Atletico Paranense, and FLW understands that Leeds boss Neil Redfearn is considering making a move for the midfielder.

Merida's career has taken a dip since leaving Premier League side Arsenal, where he was regarded as the successor to Cesc Fabregas.

Few could foresee Merida’s current predicament during his time at Arsenal, where he looked for all the world like the next big thing, however his potential never reached what was thought of him.

Merida joined Atletico Madrid in 2010, where he failed to recapture his the form he showcased at Arsenal.

Disappointing spells with Braga, Hercules and most recently Atletico Paranaense followed, and now the player is looking to reignite his still-young career back in England.

The club though, can still sign loan players and free agents as long as there is no upfront fee involved in any deal.

Merida was linked with a move to fellow Championship club Middlesbrough, however that deal does not look likely to happen, as reported on FLW.

The midfielder would certainly add another dimension to Leeds' midfield options, and will provide an element of creativity to help propel them up the division.

The Elland Road outfit are also set to battle Sheffield Wednesday for the signing of Rangers attacking midfielder Nicky Law, as reported on FLW this week.
