Leeds United are considering appointing Matias Almeyda as an alternative to Marcelo Bielsa, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Bielsa remains the top choice for Leeds as they search for Paul Heckingbottom's successor at Elland Road but they are keeping Almeyda in mind as a back-up choice.

Almeyda was most recently in charge of C.D. Guadalajara, who play in the top flight in Mexico, and he won numerous trophies with them including the Clausura 2017 and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2018.

The former 35-cap Argentina international previously had success managing in his home nation, leading both River Plate and Banfield to promotions from Primera B Nacional to the top flight of Argentinian football.

The 44-year-old is one of two alternatives that Leeds have identified should Bielsa reject their approach for him.

The other is an unnamed British coach.

But Bielsa is still the man Leeds want for the role with the 62-year-old mulling over his future while in Argentina.

The Argentine, formerly manager of Argentina, Chile, Marseille, Lazio, Lille and others, has other options in case the move to Elland Road falls through.

With Bielsa stalling on his decision, Leeds may instead swoop for Almeyda as their next manager.

The Verdict

Almeyda has enjoyed success in his managerial career so far and a promotion-winning manager is always a bonus.

But he has never coached outside of the Americas and a move to Leeds would represent a major risk for the Whites.

Almeyda has never played or coached in England so there will be question marks over his grasp of the English language but it could just be one of those obscure decisions which pay off.
