Lewie Coyle has extended his stay away from Leeds United, with the right-back signing with Fleetwood Town on loan for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

Leeds have opted to allow the young right-back to develop away from Elland Road over the last 18 months, despite Coyle featuring regularly under Garry Monk during the 2016/17 campaign.

Those spells away from Leeds have come at Fleetwood, who Coyle has featured for on 77 occasions.

His current spell at the Highbury Stadium was set to end this month, but Leeds have confirmed on their official website that the 23-year-old has signed an extension with Fleetwood.

That’ll mean that Coyle completes a second season with the Cod Army and will work with Joey Barton for at least another six months.

Despite the lengthy injury list that has hindered Leeds over the course of the season, they’ve managed at right-back.

Luke Ayling, Gaetano Berardi, Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shackleton have all had individual injury problems, but between the quartet they’ve offered Marcelo Bielsa’s side enough during the first-half of the Championship season.

Currently it is Shackleton and Ayling sharing the burden in the absence of Berardi and Dallas.

The Verdict

This was a deal that was expected to go through as Leeds have made it clear that Coyle wouldn’t be recalled.

He’s progressing nicely at Fleetwood and playing regular football, which he wouldn’t get at Leeds.

Of course, Bielsa’s injury problems might make this look foolish, but the bigger picture tells you this new agreement is the right one.
