Leeds United have announced that young midfielder Alfie McCalmont has signed a new deal with the club that will keep him at Elland Road until 2021.

The 18-year-old is highly-rated at Thorp Arch and was very impressive for the U18s last season as they secured the Professional Development League North title.

This season, McCalmont has stepped up to join Carlos Corberan's U23 side and he has continued to show his ability.

And, he has been rewarded for that, with the Whites confirming on their website that they had agreed a new two-and-a-half year deal with the player.

As part of the contract, Leeds also have a one-year option that would allow them to extend the deal.

Known for his ability on the ball, McCalmont is a technically-sound midfielder and he has played his part in what has been a good season for the U23s, who currently top their Professional Development League.

They are back in action tonight, where the teenager could once again feature, as they travel to take on Southampton in the Premier League Cup.

The Verdict

This is good news for Leeds as McCalmont looks to have a lot of potential and a new deal recognises the progress he has made.

He has handled the step up to the U23s very well this season and his next target will be to try and get involved in the first-team over the spell of this contract.

Leeds have a very talented academy and it's good to see they are looking to reward those who are doing well.
