Leeds United are set to announce the signing of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood on a free transfer, according to reports from the Daily Mirror (December 11, Page 53).

The 34-year old has never played a senior game under Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay and hasn’t made an appearance for the Owls for over a year, having fallen behind Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith in the pecking order at Hillsborough.

Reports have now surfaced, however, that Leeds are reportedly close to signing the Owls shot-stopper, having been linked with a host of goalkeepers of late.

News broke out on Monday afternoon that Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow was reportedly being eyed up by both Leeds and their promotion rivals Aston Villa - Burnley’s Tom Heaton has also been linked with a move to Elland Road.

The Whites are in need of a goalkeeper to challenge Bailey Peacock-Farrell, after Jamal Blackman had his loan spell cut short after breaking his leg last month.

Westwood, 34, would be an astute, experienced signing for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, who currently sit 2nd in the Championship- five points clear of 3rd.

The Verdict

Wow - this has come out of nowhere!

Westwood would be a fantastic signing for Leeds - he’s 34 but he’s still a very good goalkeeper and would provide excellent mentoring and competition for Peacock-Farrell.

On a free transfer, what a fantastic piece of business this would be.
