Leeds United striker Mallik Wilks is set to join Grimsby Town on-loan until the end of the season, according to BBC reporter Adam Pope on Twitter.

The 19-year-old spent the first half of the campaign in League Two with high flying Accrington Stanley, before returning to West Yorkshire this month having scored three goals in eighteen appearances.

Pope reports that Wilks had offers from Carlisle and Chesterfield, but it is believed that his preferred destination is to head to northern Lincolnshire to link up with the Mariners, who are in the hunt for a play-off spot this season.

Wilks is held in high regard at Elland Road, and will hope that a solid spell over the course of the next six months will be enough to convince manager Thomas Christiansen to keep him at Elland Road next season.

The Verdict

Wilks is a talented youngster with a lot of potential, and showed glimpses of his ability whilst with Accrington in the first half of the campaign.

The loan was the youngster’s first taste of first-team football, and it will certainly take some time to adapt having competed in the reserves and various levels of youth football.

If Wilks completes a move to Blundell Park he will join the club a much better player than he was in the summer, and his time at Accrington should put him in good stead for a solid spell with Russell Slade’s side.
