Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear has provided a positive update on their discussions with the EFL, revealing that they working closely with them and other club CEOs to ensure they can achieve the primary objective of completing the season.

The EFL season has now been suspended for more than a month and it remains unclear if, how, and when it will resume.

There have been reports and rumours circling on the topic – ranging from a 56-day plan to complete the season to suggestions that some League One and Two clubs want it ended immediately.

In his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Kinnear provided a positive update on their discussion with the EFL.

He said: "Our discussions with the governing bodies of football continued this week and despite press reports of regional leagues and the premature curtailment of League’s One and Two everyone across the EFL, the Premier League and the FA and UEFA remains firm that the primary objective is to complete this season when it is safe to do so.

"The conversations between the EFL board and club CEOs has never been more collegiate and a huge amount of work has been undertaken with medical professionals on scenario planning the safest ways to return to competitive action."

Few sides will be more determined to see the season completed in its entirety than the Whites, who look on course to end their 16-year absence from the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa's side are top of the Championship and have a seven-point gap over the play-offs with nine games remaining.

The Verdict

The longer the delay goes on without any concrete news about the completion of the season, the more concerned Leeds fans are likely to become.

That said, this update from Kinnear seems very positive. At this point, he suggests that clubs, the EFL, the FA, the Premier League, and UEFA remain agreed that the season needs to be completed and are working toward that joint goal.

Leeds have put a lot into their promotion push this season, so they will be looking to ensure the 2019/20 campaign can be resumed and they can end their 16-year wait for top-flight football.
