Speaking to Burton Albion’s official website, Garry Monk has praised the club’s rise through the Football League, likening it to Swansea City’s previous achievements.

Monk played for Swansea between 2004 and 2015, helping the club from League Two to the Premier League, before taking over as manager at the Liberty Stadium.

The 38-year old admitted he sees similarities between his former club and Burton, who themselves have risen from the bottom of the Football League and into the Sky Bet Championship- where they look set for survival.

Monk said: “I have been lucky in my career to, in terms of a small club making its way and punching above its weight, have been involved in that and know how it feels to be part of that and part of the community of that.

"So, credit to Burton and it is a great achievement what they have done this season."

Monk is now managing Leeds United in the Championship, and his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigel Clough’s Burton on Saturday, which all but ended their hopes of making the Play-Offs.

While Monk and Leeds were left crushed by Saturday’s result, it moved Burton six-points clear of the Championship’s relegation zone, and with just two fixtures of the season remaining, Clough’s side are set to defy the odds and survive.
