Thomas Christiansen has once again handed his backing to Felix Wiedwald, with the Leeds United goalkeeper finding himself under pressure, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay.

Wiedwald started the season as Leeds’ number one, but lost his place to Andy Lonergan at the start of October.

However, Christiansen had put his faith back in Wiedwald over Leeds’ last three Championship fixtures, with the German goalkeeper helping Leeds to two victories and a draw.

Wiedwald came in for criticism following last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers, after the 27-year-old made a jaw-dropping mistake to let the Rs back into the contest when Leeds were cruising at 2-0.

Luckily the goalkeeper’s mistake didn’t prevent Leeds from picking up three points, and Christiansen has handed his backing to the German, insisting he is one of the best goalkeepers currently playing in the Championship.

Wiedwald is expected to retain his place in Christiansen’s starting XI tomorrow, as Leeds go in search of three more points to put the pressure on the top-six heading into the festive period.

Leeds currently sit seventh, four points adrift of Sheffield United, who sit sixth.

The Verdict

Perhaps Christiansen’s comment suggesting Wiedwald is one of the better goalkeepers in the Championship is an exaggeration, but it is good to see the Leeds boss defending his goalkeeper once again.

Wiedwald has done well since his return to the starting XI, and last Saturday’s mistake was a complete freak incident that you don’t often see.

Leeds’ supporters will be hoping the German can bounce back tomorrow against Norwich.
