New Leeds United boss Paul Heckingbottom has said that the club’s recent disciplinary record is a problem, during his press conference ahead of the Whites’ trip to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay shared the manager’s words on Twitter live from the event, with the former Barnsley gaffer stressing the importance of maintaining control over the course of the ninety minutes.

Leeds’ record has been shocking as of late, with the club receiving red cards in four of their last five matches.

The run began in the FA Cup defeat to Newport when Spanish playmaker Samu Saiz was dismissed in added time for spitting at an opponent, receiving a subsequent six-game ban for his actions.

Further dismissals for Eunan O’Kane, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi saw Leeds lose each of their fixtures in which a player was given his marching orders.

“Discipline is a big problem,” the manager said. “(I’m) All for aggression but you have to have control (it).

“Sendings off through lack of control we've got to address. We've done things already”

The Verdict

Leeds fans will be relieved to hear that their new boss has prioritised the club’s ill discipline as one of his first areas of improvement following his appointment, with a magnitude of points being dropped in recent weeks due to their indiscretions.

Heckingbottom has a lot on his plate already at Elland Road and a lot of work to do if he is to turn around Leeds’ fortunes in the coming months to secure an unlikely top six finish, and this really does begin with addressing the issue of consistent sending offs.

Install a cleaner mentality at the club, and Leeds will begin to find wins once again.
