Thomas Christiansen has confirmed that Andy Lonergan opted not to go through with his move to Sunderland on deadline day, with the Leeds United boss confirming the club have welcomed the goalkeeper back with open arms, as reported by BBC Radio Leeds’, Adam Pope.

It looked as though Lonergan would be leaving Elland Road earlier this week, with the 34-year-old goalkeeper heading to Sunderland to complete a move to the Stadium of Light, however, reports from the YEP late in the day on Wednesday confirmed the move wasn’t happening.

Christiansen has revealed that the goalkeeper has had a change of heart and returned to Elland Road to link back up with the rest of his playing squad.

Speaking about Lonergan’s surprise change of heart, Christiansen said:

Lonergan has made nine appearances across all competitions for Leeds this season, providing cover for Felix Wiedwald, who has been Christiansen’s first choice for the bulk of the campaign.

The 34-year-old was an unused substitute against Hull City on Tuesday evening, and will be expected to take a place on the bench again this weekend, as Leeds entertain Cardiff City at Elland Road.

The Whites are looking to put a winless January behind them and pick up three points on their first outing in February.

The Verdict

Lonergan’s failed move was a surprise to most at Leeds, as it looked like the goalkeeper was going in search of a chance at first-team football.

However, the club have little option but to welcome Lonergan back, as he is the only senior cover to Wiedwald available.

The goalkeeper’s decision has to be seen as a positive for Leeds, as entering the second-half of the season without senior cover, would’ve been a risk.
