Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom is refusing to talk to the media about the possibility of signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga on a permanent deal, according to sports journalist Joe Redmond.

In his press conference prior to Leeds United's weekend game against his former club Barnsley, Heckingbottom refused to be drawn on Lasogga's future.

There is a clause in Lasogga's contract which, if activated, would allow the Whites to keep him at Elland Road for next season too.

But the 26-year-old has had an inconsistent year, showing glimpses of form but also having very poor games too.

His return is not atrocious with ten goals and three assists in 30 league games, but considering he was signed as a replacement for Chris Wood, he has failed to live up to expectations.

Heckingbottom was quizzed about the rumours suggesting Leeds will not take up their option to buy Lasogga but the Leeds boss was not prepared to talk to the media about this.

Redmond added that he believes that this suggests the move is off.

Leeds face Barnsley this weekend but with little to play for now, Heckingbottom is surely already casting his mind ahead to the summer transfer window and a new striker is likely to be on their wishlist, especially if Lasogga returns to Hamburg.

The Verdict

Lasogga would not be a disastrous signing as he is a solid striker at Championship level but he is never going to be the prolific goal scorer that they need to be competing for promotion. In my opinion, he is better than Ekuban and Grot and I would consider signing him if the price is right. But it will be no big loss to the Whites if he returns to Hamburg instead.
