Leeds United have suffered a double injury blow ahead of their play-off semi-final second leg against Derby County with Kemar Roofe and Adam Forshaw both ruled out.

The Whites claimed a 1-0 victory in the first leg courtesy of Roofe's second-half strike, but both players were withdrawn prematurely at Pride Park due to their injuries.

Jack Clarke was the man who replaced Roofe, while Jamie Shackleton came in for Forshaw following the attacking midfielder's his first-half injury.

But Shackleton proved to be a more than capable deputy for Forshaw, with the Leeds academy product adding a fresh dynamism to the midfield that made Marcelo Bielsa's side look more threatening on the attack.

His pace when driving from midfield enabled Leeds to gain momentum at a quicker rate on the attack, while his tireless work rate on top meant that the enforced substitution benefitted Leeds to a degree.

Shackleton was initially thrust into Bielsa's first-team plans at the start of the season as he made early appearances against Derby and Swansea City. He is a centre-midfielder by trade, but he has been largely used as a right-back when called upon this season.

However, the 19-year-old will be disappointed to have not featured for more than his 453 minutes this season, especially given his encouraging performances when utilised in either midfield or defence.

His substitute appearance at Pride Park was his first senior run-out since mid-March, with Bielsa choosing to keep him on the bench during Leeds' final run-in where they stumbled over the regular season's finishing line.

Given the patchy form of Leeds' squad during this period, many supporters have been calling for Shackleton to feature more. Forshaw's injury means the midfielder should finally get his chance at a pivotal moment in the season.

With the firm backing of the Leeds faithful, his energy and creativity should allow him to thrive under the Elland Road lights on Wednesday night as Bielsa's side target a Wembley appearance.

He has been somewhat out of favour in recent weeks, but Forshaw's injury now could well have come at the right time for Shackleton to prove himself to Bielsa. After all, there is a potential play-off final on the horizon.
