Leeds United are in discussions over a potential swap deal involving Andy Lonergan and an unknown member of Chris Coleman’s Sunderland squad, as reported by Football Insider.

Coleman is looking to bolster his squad at the Stadium of Light this week, in a bid to help Sunderland fight off relegation in the Sky Bet Championship, with Lonergan seemingly a target.

Robbin Ruiter and Jason Steele have failed to give Coleman a reliable option in goal for Sunderland, with the former Welsh national manager keen on Lonergan, who has been with Leeds under six months.

Sunderland have made enquiries about Lonergan’s availability, with Leeds entering discussions with their Championship rivals over a potential swap deal involving the 34-year-old goalkeeper and an unnamed member of Coleman’s squad.

Lonergan was brought back to Elland Road during the summer to supply cover for Felix Wiedwald, but after a string of unimpressive performances from the German, Thomas Christiansen opted to promote the veteran goalkeeper.

However, like his teammate, Lonergan was guilty of making mistakes, and after conceding 13 goals in just seven Championship appearances, Christiansen reinstated Wiedwald.

Lonergan has been an unused substitute in Leeds’ last 10 Championship fixtures, but did feature in the FA Cup defeat to Newport County.

The Verdict

Wiedwald is back as first choice at Elland Road, and Lonergan’s opportunities for the remainder of the season are looking limited, which is perhaps why the Whites are considering letting him leave.

In terms of Sunderland, neither Ruiter nor Steele has been convincing, which has left Coleman in a tricky situation at a late stage of the transfer window.

Sunderland need to act fast, but if a deal sending Lonergan to the Stadium of Light sees Leeds get a player in return, it could be a move that suits all parties.
