Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday amongst clubs battling Brighton to sign Championship ace

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday are battling with Premier League outfit, Brighton and Hove Albion, in the race to sign Josh Vela from Bolton Wanderers in January.

Brighton are looking to bolster their squad ahead of the second-half of the Premier League season and have identified Vela as a target, but the Seagulls are likely to face competition from Leeds, Derby and Wednesday, all of whom want to add the midfielder to their armoury to bolster their respective play-off hopes.

Vela has 18 months left on his deal at the Macron Stadium, but could be sacrificed by Bolton during the January transfer window, as the Trotters look ease their financial worries.

So far this season, the 23-year-old has featured in 10 of Bolton’s 20 Championship fixtures, playing a crucial role in recent weeks, helping Phil Parkinson’s side on a sensational run that has lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Bolton have lost just once in their last nine Championship fixtures, with Vela featuring in in all nine, including Saturday’s 3-1 triumph over Barnsley, which lifted Parkinson’s side to 21st, ahead of Birmingham City, who play tonight, on goal difference.

The Verdict

Vela has proved to be crucial for Bolton in recent weeks, playing a key role in midfield and helping the Trotters on a sensational run of form, which has given them hope of surviving this season.

Losing the midfielder in January would be a huge blow for Bolton, but it is no surprise to hear of the interest in the 23-year-old, who has built up an impressive reputation.

He would undoubtedly improve the likes of Leeds, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Brighton’s interest is credit to the quality of Vela.
