Leeds United are set to miss out in their pursuit of Manchester City defender Jason Denayer, according to Turkish outlet Aksam, reported by Turkish Football.

The Belgian international had been linked with a switch to Elland Road, but the recent report suggests he is now intent on returning to Galatasaray, where he won a Super Lig title last season and will enjoy Champions League football.

The 26-year old had also been interesting Scottish champions Celtic, but today's report seems to put an end to both club's hopes of securing a deal for Denayer.

The report states Leeds had an £8m bid turned down recently, with Denayer looking instead for a loan switch away from the Etihad.

His international career has stalled recently, despite being included in their Euro 2016 squad, he barely featured in World Cup qualification and wasn't in the 23-man squad that finished third in Russia.

Leeds will now look elsewhere for extra squad depth, although they do have until the end of August to bring in a fresh player on loan.

The Verdict

Champions League or Carabao Cup? That is the choice offered to Jason Denayer and it appears as though he's opted for Barcelona over Barnsley as a potential opponent next season.

Galatasaray are one of the biggest clubs in Europe and in truth, this latest development in no surprise, nor is it a sleight on Leeds United. Denayer was always an ambitious target and so it has come to pass.
