Leeds United and Birmingham City have joined the race to sign Jack Colback this January, with the midfielder looking set to leave Newcastle United in the New Year to return to the Sky Bet Championship, reports the Birmingham Mail.

Newcastle are desperate to get Colback off their books during the January transfer window, with either a minimal transfer fee or loan deal expected, as the Magpies offer the midfielder a route out of St James’ Park.

Colback’s previous club Sunderland have also been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, who is yet to feature for Newcastle on their Premier League return under Rafa Benitez.

Leeds and Birmingham have now joined Sunderland in the race to land Colback’s signature in the New Year.

Last season in the Championship, the midfielder featured regularly for Benitez’s side, alongside the likes of Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey in central midfield.

Colback featured on 29 occasions in the Championship for Newcastle last season, helping Benitez’s side secure an instant return to the top-flight and the Championship title in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season.

Over the summer Colback turned down moves to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City.

The Verdict

Colback’s time with Newcastle looks to be over, with a January move almost a certainty for the midfielder.

The 28-year-old would improve the squad at Leeds, whilst the likelihood is, he would find more starting opportunities at Birmingham or Sunderland, who are both struggling in the Championship.

If Colback is available on the cheap, he could attract more interest from the Championship in the New Year.
