Sheffield United have completed their first signing of the summer transfer window, securing the services of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a season-long loan deal.

The club's official website has confirmed the arrival of Henderson just days after he penned a new two-year contract with Man United, committing his future to the Red Devils until the summer of 2020.

Henderson was a man in demand this summer and the Blades have swooped ahead of a number of teams to snap him up.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Roma, Benfica and Olympiacos were all interested before the 21-year-old had signed a new contract, as well as Bristol City, Stoke City and Fulham.

Other clubs credited with an interest included Swansea City, Leeds United and Aston Villa.

But Sheffield United have won the race for Henderson, who has a big void to fill after Jamal Blackman's impressive displays on loan from Chelsea last season.

Henderson was a top performer on loan at Shrewsbury Town last season, keeping 19 clean sheets and earning himself a spot between the sticks in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

The England under-21 international helped guide Salop to the League One play-off final, where he saved a penalty but his side were ultimately defeated by Rotherham United.

The Verdict

This is very shrewd business by Sheffield United, who presumably did not want to miss out on signing a top young goalkeeper on loan with the Blackman deal going quiet in recent weeks.

The youngster was the best goalkeeper in League One last season so there is no reason why he cannot continue to get better in the second tier.

Wilder has now sorted one of his problem positions as he starts to shape up his Blades squad for another promotion bid.
