Leeds United have joined the race to sign Spanish midfielder Mario Ortiz, according to a report from Spanish media outlet Leonoticias.

The source claims that the Whites are in the running to land the 28-year old, who currently plys his trade at Deportivo Leonesa, who play in the Spanish second division.

Leeds are reportedly rivalling Belgian outfit KAS Eupen in the race to land the player who played 45 games in all competitions last term, netting 3 times, though he could well remain at Leonesa, who were crowned champions of the league this season.

The report reveals the player has two years left on his current deal with La Cultu.

Midfield reinforcement could be a smart move for the Whites, who saw the moment they enjoyed for much of the last campaign under Garry Monk slip away in the final few games, denying them a spot in the Play-Offs.

Currently managerless, Leeds appointed a new a Spanish director of football by the name of Victor Orta last week, who quit as Middlesbrough’s European recruitment chief, following their relegation from the Premier League, therefore could play an integral role in luring Ortiz to Elland Road.
