Luke Ayling has taken to his personal Twitter account to express his delight at agreeing a new contract with Leeds United, which sees him tied to the Elland Road club until at least the summer of 2021.

Leeds have moved to secure the service of a number of the club’s senior players in recent months, with Ayling the latest. Ayling’s contract with the Whites was set to expire at the end of next season, but Leeds have moved to agree a new four-year deal with the defender.

Ayling has been ever-present for Leeds this season, featuring in all 15 fixtures across the Sky Bet Championship and Carabao Cup. The 26-year-old took to Twitter shortly after agreeing his new deal, saying:

Leeds currently sit sixth in the Championship table, but enter this weekend’s fixtures on a worrying run of form, having lost four of their last five fixtures, including three on the spin.

Christiansen’s side have slipped from top to sixth in just a matter of weeks, and face one of the five clubs currently above them this weekend, when they travel to Ashton Gate to face Ayling’s former club, Bristol City.

The Whites face a mammoth task of picking up three points in Bristol this weekend, with Lee Johnson’s side unbeaten in their last 12.

The Verdict

What a move by Leeds to secure Ayling’s long-term future. The defender has been immense since his arrival at Elland Road, establishing himself as one of the Championship’s standout right-backs.

Leeds will benefit from Ayling’s best years as a professional, and the 26-year-old will be key to the Whites turning things around in the Championship.

Ayling will want to pick up a positive result against his former club this weekend, and the performance of the right-back and the rest of Leeds’ defensive unit will be key.
