Speaking to the Express, Pontus Jansson has backed Pierre-Michel Lasogga to be a success at Leeds United.

Leeds moved to sign the German striker on transfer deadline day, with Lasogga opting to leave Hamburg and arrive at Elland Road on a season-long loan.

Lasogga has been viewed as Chris Wood’s direct replacement following his £15m move to Burnley, and Jansson has backed his new teammate to be a success in the Sky Bet Championship, he said: “He’s a good guy. I have some friends in the [Sweden] national team who have played with him at Hamburg, so I know a bit about him.

“He has started with two good goals and some good finishes and I think he’s going to be important for us.

“The change this year is that we have so many more offensive options. With Wood, he was a good target but now we have players with other qualities.”

Wood scored 30 goals across all competitions for Leeds last season, and Lasogga has enjoyed a fast start to his career at Elland Road, scoring twice on his debut against Burton Albion over the weekend.

The 25-year-old opened his account with a fine first-half finish, before doubling his tally with a well-taken header just before the hour mark, as Thomas Christiansen’s side headed for a 5-0 victory.

Saturday’s triumph helped Leeds to second in the Championship table, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season under Christiansen.

Leeds now have a quick turnaround, with Birmingham City set to visit Elland Road on Tuesday evening, with the Championship’s intensity stepping up in September.

The Verdict

Lasogga’s Leeds debut was extremely impressive, with the striker’s performance indicating he will certainly be a success in the Championship.

The German’s movement and link up play was excellent, whilst he took his two goals extremely well and should have had more goals to his name.

Lasogga was removed shortly after scoring his second goal, with Christiansen clearly keeping one eye on Tuesday’s clash with Birmingham, which promises to be a much harder contest for the Whites.

However, after an impressive display on Saturday, Christiansen will be confident his side can continue their unbeaten start.
