Mateusz Klich’s brace helped Leeds United to a convincing 4-0 victory over Middlesbrough at Elland Road this afternoon, with the Whites moving back to the top of the Championship table.

Leeds were in a rampant mood, and goals from Patrick Bamford, Klich (2) and Helder Costa, made it a convincing win for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and a tough return to Elland Road for Jonathan Woodgate.

Bielsa’s side left it late to beat Reading on Tuesday night, but they were out of the blocks fast this afternoon with an electric opening 10 minutes.

Luke Ayling curled an effort wide and had Aynsley Pears worried inside the opening 60 seconds, with a breakthrough not far away.

A Jack Harrison cross found Bamford and the striker forced another good save from Pears. However, Boro made a mess of clearing, with Pablo Hernandez lifting the ball back into the area for Bamford to bury a header on three minutes; a timely goal with Eddie Nketiah watching on from the bench.

And, the 26-year-old was again forcing Pears into a save five minutes later with a snapshot from his right foot. Ayling would fire over for the second time, with Leeds really piling the pressure on Woodgate’s side.

Lewis Wing had Boro’s first attempt at Kiko Casilla’s goal on 12 minutes, but the midfielder pulled his shot wide.

If the travelling Boro support thought that might spark them into life, they were wrong, with Leeds in control for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. The only minus was Kalvin Phillips’ fifth yellow card of the season, earning him a one-match ban.

Pablo Hernandez was pulling the strings in the No.10 role, and as half-time approached, Leeds began turning the screw once more.

Bamford – really turning up against his former side – latched onto a long ball and his cut back fell the way of the advancing Klich, with the Pole’s effort deflecting beyond the busy Pears for 2-0 right on the stroke of half-time.

That really put a spring into Leeds’ step at the start of the second-half, with Bielsa’s side arguably playing some of their best football this season.

Harrison’s fierce effort forced Pears into an early save, with this rampant Leeds performance really gathering momentum.

Pears would deny Bamford again, but Leeds’ third was coming, and when Costa found himself scampering across the Boro area, you sensed the ball would find the back of the net.

A little bit of luck gave the winger the chance to swing a left foot at the ball, with his effort too strong for Pears this time. 3-0 on 67 minutes and Elland Road’s atmosphere building.

More impressive interplay from Leeds was pulling Boro all over the pitch, and Klich had his second of the afternoon on 73 minutes.

A corner was worked the way of the Polish international on the edge of the area, with Klich shaping up Pears’ goal and curling a beautiful finish into the top corner.

Leeds wanted more and Pears produced another good save to deny Phillips’ free-kick as the game ticked into its final 10 minutes.

Boro would prevent Leeds from adding to their four-goal haul, but this was grim viewing all the same for the Teessiders, as Bielsa watched his side comfortably move back to the top of the Championship table.

FULL-TIME: Leeds United 4-0 Middlesbrough.
