Aaron Lennon’s last appearance in a Leeds United shirt came back in May 2005 as the Whites played out a goalless draw with Rotherham United, and this weekend the winger has been linked with an emotional return to Elland Road.

Leeds are in pursuit of a return to the Premier League and, should they get their over the course of the next 16 games, they want Lennon back.

That’s the latest according to The Sun, with Marcelo Bielsa running the rule over the 31-year-old with the view to bringing him back on board should Leeds return to the top table of English football.

The former England international is currently playing his football at Turf Moor with Burnley, where he’s made 16 appearances this season.

Whilst a return to Elland Road would be emotional and well received amongst supporters, they will be wary about the player’s lack of form in recent years.

Of course, Lennon has a huge amount of experience and club and international level, with many remembering his blistering form for Tottenham, the club he signed for from Leeds shortly after that clash with Rotherham.

Spells with Everton and Burnley since then have been far from productive, with Lennon returning one goal and one assist in his 16 appearances this season.

In fact, you’ve got to go back to the 2015/16 campaign when Lennon last returned five league goals in a campaign, with his form stuttering due to injuries and falling down the pecking order at various clubs.

Should Leeds win promotion, Lennon is the calibre of player Bielsa will need. A player with experience of the top-flight and knows how to deal with a demanding crowd.

However, is Lennon exactly what the Whites need? Is a player with only eight league goals in 95 appearances the man to help Leeds establish themselves back in the top-flight?

It might be an emotional return but Lennon doesn’t feel like the type of signing Leeds need. They’ll need signings, but it has to be the right type of player. Sentiment needs to go out of the window.
