Leeds should launch a cull of their left-backs. Marcelo Bielsa has publicised his desire to ruthlessly swing the axe, with up to 15 players in line for the chop. The failures of those given the left-back berth last season should see them step up to the block.

The principal three left-backs at Elland Road last season were Gaetano Berardi (19 appearances), Vurnon Anita (14 appearances), and Laurens De Bock (7 appearances). They have international experience and Champions League experience They all failed and frustrated.

When on the pitch, Berardi was a standard performer: nothing horrendous, yet hardly creating a highlight reel. However, he conspired to miss nine games through suspension. Leeds fans appreciate passion, not stupidity. Berardi mixed up the two repeatedly.

Unlike Berardi, Anita had an eye on creating highlight reels. Unfortunately, these were for opposing players. The ex-Newcastle player was constantly turned inside out by wingers. Some argue he is a more natural midfielder. Yet there are a plethora of more capable midfielders already at the club.

De Bock arrived in January to stop others playing out of position. Yet, he appeared to be in the wrong position himself. His performances against Derby and Reading were particular lowlights and ensured he remained unpicked for the rest of the season.

20-year-old Tom Pearce finished the season as first choice left-back. In his five games, his goals and assists tally (one goal, no assists) was higher than the aforementioned trio combined. Pearce may not be the answer, but he puts the ineptitude of the others in sharp relief.
