Leeds United will not benefit from Lewis Cook’s potential England debut this weekend, but his Grandfather could be set to pocket a huge £17,000 from any involvement.

AFC Bournemouth’s Cook is on the verge of an England debut this weekend, having been called into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad ahead of this evening clash with Holland.

Cook has progressed rapidly since his breakthrough with Leeds in 2014, and since completing a move from Elland Road to Bournemouth in the summer of 2016, the midfielder’s star has continued to rise.

The Yorkshire Evening Post have confirmed that Leeds did not include any clause in their deal with Bournemouth that would see them benefit financially from a potential England debut- which is a negotiation blunder on their part - but a member of Cook’s family will.

The midfielder’s Grandfather placed £500 on Cook to earn an England cap before he turned 26, which means if he features this weekend, he can claim a huge £17k from William Hill, who gave him odds of 33/1 back in 2014 when the midfielder was emerging from Leeds' academy.

England are in action against Holland this evening, before returning to Wembley to face Italy next week.

The Verdict

Leeds’ supporters will be watching this week’s England internationals with added interest, as a member of their talented academy is in-line for a debut under Southgate.

Anyone who saw Cook come through Leeds’ academy will have seen an extreme talent, and the midfielder finding himself on the verge of a international debut will be no surprise to anyone at Elland Road.

Impressing in the coming week could offer Cook an opportunity to travel with England to the World Cup in the summer.
