Mateusz Klich has been something of a revelation this season at Leeds United, with the Polish midfielder bouncing back after a difficult first year at Elland Road to play a major part in the club’s promotion push.

Leeds didn’t see the best of Klich last season, but this year he started with goals against Stoke and Derby in the first two games of the season and hasn’t looked back.

An ever-present in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI, Klich has eight goals and seven assists to his name in 38 Championship appearances.

Yet, Bielsa revealed to the Yorkshire Evening Post yesterday that the 28-year-old might not have been around, with Klich pushing for an exit last summer.

Bielsa stated that prior to Leeds’ final pre-season game Klich was seen as fourth choice in an attacking midfield role, but Adam Forshaw’s injury and Ronaldo Vieira’s sale opened the door for him to impress. He did, and didn’t look back.

Surely, from the player’s point of view, he will be delighted that he didn’t push his move away from Leeds, with the midfielder looking to be part of something really special at Elland Road.

The Leeds side that won promotion in 1989/90 are heroes at Elland Road, and if Klich can help get this current crop of players over the line this season, he is going to fall into a special category of player in Leeds.

Of course he will have been frustrated last season and in the summer, but his attitude has been superb and the way he’s worked his way to becoming a mainstay in Bielsa’s side deserves huge credit.

This transfer story has come as a surprise to many at Leeds, but Klich can’t let his focus drift. He needs to get back to scoring goals and helping the Whites over the line in the race for promotion.

If he can finish the season like he started it then Leeds have a great chance.
