Leeds United are reportedly interested in bringing in Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Iturraspe in the summer, reports Monday’s Basque edition of AS, via Sports Witness.

The Spaniard is a free-agent at the end of the season and was previously managed by Marcelo Bielsa during his time with the Basque club.

The 30-year-old has been with the club for 20-years, racking up 319 appearances in that time as a deep lying midfielder.

But he has found opportunities hard to come by this season, struggling with a foot injury, and racking up just two La Liga appearances.

However, his former boss is believed to still be a big fan of his and will make a move for him if the Whites are promoted to the Premier League.

They currently sit in second place with just ten matches left of the season, two points ahead of Sheffield United in third place and two behind league-leaders Norwich City.

They face relegation threatened Reading at the Madjeski tonight as they look to move a step closer to that much-desired promotion.

The verdict

I am not too sure what to make of this move.

On the one hand, Iturraspe clearly has the credentials to be a top signing but given his recent injury problems it is far from a guarantee.

It would also be a big shame to see him come in and interrupt the progress of Kalvin Phillips in that defensive midfield area.
