Tottenham comprehensively beat Rochdale 6-1 last night to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup but it was VAR that once again had everyone talking.

After just five minutes the Premier League side had a goal ruled out because of the video and it seemed very harsh.

Following that, a free-kick call was correctly changed to a penalty, which was then disallowed after Son Heung-Min stopped during his run-up.

It was a bizarre opening 45 minutes, which Mauricio Pochettino branded ‘embarrassing’ and it had the football world talking, including Leeds United’s Liam Cooper.

The Whites skipper shared his thoughts on VAR with a tweet, calling it a ‘shambles’ and adding that it shouldn’t be used from now on.

Since it was introduced earlier in the season, VAR has created a lot of controversy, with Willian denied a clear penalty against Norwich in the FA Cup earlier in the season even though the technology was available.

As well as that, Liverpool’s tie against West Brom was another that saw many incidents checked on the system in a stop-start game.

Fortunately for Cooper, the system has only been used in cup games so far in this season.

The Verdict

VAR is a hot topic in football at the minute but it’s always interesting to get a perspective of a professional and clearly Cooper isn’t a fan.

It’s easy to see why and there are many flaws with it at the minute, even if they are getting to the correct decision more often than not.

What happens from here remains to be seen but it’s clearly a divisive subject among players and fans.
