Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has spelled out the list of characteristics that any potential successor to Thomas Christiansen, who was relieved of his duties in the Elland Road hotseat last night, must have in order to succeed.

It would be trite to say that Whelan's list of demands are what the fans of every club want to see in their manager - he has essentially just listed lots of attributes a good manager has, after all.

However, it is clear that he feels that the soul of the club is on the way down; too many players do not understand the expectations of the club and what it means to people like him and their loyal fans.

Leeds have slipped away two years running and it is clear that Whelan feels a lack of passion is a key factor in that.

The Verdict

It's an old school approach from Whelan and passion alone doesn't win promotion. I can understand his frustration and maybe he doesn't see some of the characteristics he is used to seeing in the Leeds side now.

However, the new man in charge might be a tactician or a bit calmer on the touchline and Whelan would be wise to give that approach a chance as well, if that is the case.
