Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa hints at potential January arrivals from the EFL

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has hinted that some of the Whites loanees could be recalled in January to counteract the impact of injuries on his squad, which may impact Bournemouth and a few other EFL clubs.

Some 10 players were sent out on loan by Leeds in the summer, with four joining English clubs lower down the pyramid, but with injuries taking their toll at Elland Road in 2021/22, it seems the Argentine coach may be forced to bring a few of those back early.

Speaking to Leeds Live, Bielsa addressed the prospect of recalling loanees in January.

He said: “Every player that’s on loan that can be recovered and that they’ve manifested in these six months that have gone past their competitive level is similar to that of the players we possess at the moment.

“If all of that came to be, we would try to recover that player, but for that to happen with players who have gone out on loan, it’s because I understood, and the club accompanied my idea, the players we kept were in better conditions than the ones we loaned out to resolve our needs.

“So, what we have to verify is if there’s been an evolution in them outside the club, that allows us to see that proportion has changed.”

What club did Leeds United sign each of these 29 players from?

Left-back Leif Davis joined Bournemouth and looks like the prime candidate to return to the club given his previous experience in Bielsa’s first team.

Ian Poveda could miss the whole of the season after picking up an injury on loan at Blackburn Rovers while you’d question how much impact recalling Ryan Edmonson and Alfie McCalmont from their respective loans at Fleetwood Town and Morecambe would actually have.

At this point. it is unclear which loan deals include break clauses and which do not.

The Verdict

Injuries have made things difficult for Leeds and Bielsa this season, so as January approaches it’s only natural that some focus would switch to potential loan recalls.

Given he’s playing at Championship level and is a player that the Whites boss has placed trust in previously, Davis would seem the obvious choice to bolster options in the defensive line and that may be a concern for Bournemouth.

McCalmont is another that has impressed while away from the club on loan but the step up from League One to the Premier League is a big one, so it would be a surprise to see him brought back early.

That said, we’ve seen during Bielsa’s tenure that he does put faith in young players and so it can’t be ruled out.
