Peterborough United striker Jack Marriott, who has attracted interest from Leeds United and Aston Villa in the January transfer window, has said that he is just focusing on his football despite the speculation.

The striker, who has 23 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions this season, bagged twice against Villa last weekend in the FA Cup which suggests his is not at all distracted by the talk of him moving up a league.

Posh chairman Darragh McAnthony confirmed on Twitter that he has had a conversation with a Northern Championship club regarding the sale of Marriott but nothing has been formally agreed yet.

Marriott told the Birmingham Mail: "Of course you hear [speculation], you get a bit of banter in the dressing room. I get a lot of it in the group chats as well from my mates, they’re always bantering me about it.

"But I’ve literally just got to try and brush it off. If I think too much about it, I’m not thinking about my game and ultimately, if I’m not thinking about my game then the speculation isn’t there. I’ve got to keep my head down and hopefully the performances will come."

The Verdict

These are not the words of a player angling for a move. If Leeds or Villa were hoping to unsettle Marriott then it has not worked at all.

I'm sure Marriott would love to move up a league but he has the right attitude - keep scoring goals and the interest will remain.
