A host of Premier League and Sky Bet Championship clubs are trying to sign Sam Johnstone from Manchester United, The Daily Mail is reporting.

Sam Johnstone spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and he remains a major target for them.

After a shaky start, Sam Johnstone grew into his role and kept a staggering eight clean sheets in twelve games towards the end of the season.

The 24-year-old is rated by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United but they could let him go as he remains as their third choice goalkeeper behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero.

Aston Villa are desperate to snap him up but their chances are looking slimmer as more teams enter the race.

Premier League duo Watford and Leicester City want the former England youth international too.

Watford are looking to improve their options between the sticks while Leicester are monitoring Johnstone in case Kasper Schmeichel departs.

Sunderland are eyeing up a swoop for the promising stopper as a replacement for Everton-bound Jordan Pickford while Leeds United are another interested party as Rob Green is not getting any younger.

Bristol City also remain keen as they look for someone to compete with Frank Fielding for the goalkeeper spot.

It is believed that Sam Johnstone is available for about £5m this summer with a trail of clubs keen.
