According to a report by The Yorkshire Post, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday will go head to head in the battle to sign Josh Vela from Bolton Wanderers.

Both Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to prise Vela away from a relegation battle with Bolton and promise the prospect of competing for promotion instead.

Vela is highly regarded by Bolton, having progressed through the academy and into the first team at the club.

The 24-year-old has played nearly 150 senior games for Bolton in his career so far despite his young age and he was an instrumental part of the side that won promotion from League One last season.

So far this season, Vela has played 15 games for Bolton and has scored once - in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City just before Christmas.

Predominantly a central midfielder, the versatile Bolton man is also capable of playing at right back too.

Vela has previously attracted interest from the Premier League in his younger days but is now a target for Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday as both teams look to the transfer window to bolster their respective squads.

Leeds currently sit 5th in the Championship table and are hoping to win promotion while Sheffield Wednesday are looking to rebuild after parting ways with Carlos Carvalhal.

The Verdict

If Josh Vela is to leave Bolton to join one of these two, the more sensible career move would probably be to Leeds at this stage.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently 15th and without a manager - if he wishes to move to Hillsborough, he should wait to see who the new manager is and whether he would still be wanted.

Leeds, however, are looking for reinforcements in central midfield and Vela is a capable performer at this level.
