Pablo Hernandez has stated that it could take until February or March before it becomes clear who will in pole position for promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds United failed to make a statement in the race for promotion on Saturday evening, with Hernandez and his teammates ripped apart by a rampant West Brom side.

West Brom beat Leeds 4-1 to move back into the Championship’s top-six.

Following the crushing defeat, Hernandez discussed the race for promotion, highlighting that a team running away with the league will not happen.

Speaking to the Mirror, the 33-year-old said: “This year you can’t see it like two years ago with Newcastle and Brighton, or last year with Wolves. They went to the top with a big gap.

“Now you win one game and you can go top and if you lose one game you go third or fourth. This year until February or March a lot of teams can fight for the top of the league. It’s a big fight for us.”

After 17 fixtures of the season, the Championship is as tight as you would expect.

Only five points separate the top-six, whilst Nottingham Forest, Swansea City, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers sit narrowly outside the play-off places.

The international break means there is no Championship football this coming weekend, with Leeds’ next fixture coming against Bristol City on November 24. That is closely following by Reading’s visit to Elland Road.

The Verdict

The Championship promotion race is wide open this year, with the division just waiting for one team to pull away.

Despite a heavy defeat at the weekend, Leeds are still in a strong position, as Hernandez will know.

For Leeds, it’s about staying with the leading pack and bouncing back from Saturday’s defeat after the international break.
