Huddersfield Town were one of the main surprise packages in the Championship this season and came agonisingly close to making the step up to the Premier League.

Carlos Corberan and the majority of players in the squad have significantly increased the perception of their abilities and will be confident of bouncing back to compete in the top half of the division next term.

Lee Nicholls had a wonderful debut season with the Terriers, having fallen out of favour at Milton Keynes Dons the campaign prior, and he shared his reaction to the play-off defeat but also season as a whole when he spoke to The Yorkshire Post.

He said: "It is just about dusting ourselves down now and coming back in pre-season and making sure every single one of us are ready to go again and be ready.

"The squad should be happy with what we have achieved this year.

"No one expected us to be here, apart from ourselves.

"To get beaten like that - especially with seeing the penalty shouts back - is hard.

"It is frustrating.

"It is a game with decisions that can possibly change our lives."

The Terriers' defensive solidity has laid the foundations for them to overachieve compared to their budget this term, and that could be repeatable next season if a shrewd Levi Colwill replacement can be sourced.

The Verdict

After battling against relegation in each of their previous two seasons since relegation from the Premier League, it was incredibly impressive how they performed under Corberan.

Naturally, the Terriers best performing players may become transfer targets for clubs with deeper pockets this summer, but with a strong nucleus intact, the likes of Jonathan Hogg, Tom Lees and Matty Pearson, there is no reason why Huddersfield cannot be just as difficult to beat and give themselves a chance of promotion once again.

With very little expenditure, recruitment was outstanding, in hindsight, last summer and the club will be looking to be just as clever this time around.
