Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has praised the different quality that new signing, central midfielder Markus Henriksen, will bring to the table at Ashton Gate.

The 27-year-old signed for the club on January deadline day, as he made the loan move from fellow Championship side Hull City, having been frozen out up north.

The Norwegian, who had been the Tigers captain, had failed to make an appearance this season but has been thrown a career lifeline in England's second tier, as Johnson moved sharply to snap him up.

Bristol Live were reporting from the pre-Birmingham press conference, where Johnson said (15:11 and 15:12 on 4/2): "With Henriksen, we’ve always lacked that little bit of physicality when since we sold Pack.

"He’s a good leader. He gives simple instruction with good clarity. We’re not worried about slinging him in straight away."

The signing of the 27-year-old came about when former captain and fellow central midfielder Josh Brownhill made the move to Burnley on the penultimate day of the transfer window, therefore leaving the Robins needing an extra midfielder.

As Johnson explained, Henriksen will bring more physicality to the City midfield as they have struggled to find an imposing midfielder like Marlon Pack, who left the club for Severnside rivals Cardiff City last summer.

With Henriksen's Hull contract up in the summer, it remains to be seen whether Johnson could bring the midfielder to Ashton Gate on a permanent basis if he impresses.

The Verdict

Henriksen will bring a similar quality on the ball that Brownhill added to the midfield with his calmness in pressure, while he will also try to assert his dominance on the game by using his physicality.

The experienced midfielder could turn out to be a good signing for Bristol City if he is handed a starting berth further on down the line, and he could be the determining factor in trying to maintain their playoff push.
