Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has stated that a mini break for his players was very much needed after the busy Christmas period.

The Robins had some indifferent results during the festive fixtures, but will be hoping to claim another Championship victory when they travel to Wigan this coming weekend.

It's a big game for both sides with Johnson and his squad competing for a place in the top-six whilst the Latics are in desperate need of points to move away from the drop zone.

Having played a number of fixtures in quick succession, Johnson has expressed that his side is looking much brighter after a break and that they put in their best performances when they are in this frame of mind.

Speaking to Bristol City's official website, Johnson said: "I think it [the three day break] was needed physically and mentally after a tough Christmas period but at the same time we have shown some quality play, we’ve been bright and I know that when we’re bright, enthused and happy that we put in our best performances."

The Verdict

Bristol City are still in and around the top-six and look like they're going to give it a real good go to get in the play-offs. Johnson had a great start to the campaign, but in recent weeks it has somewhat gone a bit stale and they suffered a heavy defeat at home to Brentford.

The month of January will be crucial for the Robins as they'll hope to pick up in form otherwise they'll risk moving away from contention.

A break is always nice for players to have, but you still have to make sure that mentally you're in the right mindset in order to play to the maximum in the next fixture.
