Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has stated that his side made fundamental defensive errors in the defeat at Charlton on Boxing Day.

The Robins threw away a 2-1 lead to be defeated in the fixture at The Valley, which means that Johnson's side have now lost their last four successive matches.

Pressure is starting to mount on the manager once more, as the Robins continue to slide down the table with their hopes of a top six finish fading game by game.

The ambition is there at Bristol City, but they have to start performing on a more consistent basis if they're to achieve their long-term aim of Premier League football.

Johnson has expressed his disappointment in the side for the way they defended and said it was the fundamentals that weren't executed.

Speaking to News Shopper, Johnson said: “I think that today, if you look at the goals, if you look the goals back with a coaching eye on, you'd be disappointed in the individual errors.

"It's difficult when you make errors like we have for the three goals, and it's not individual errors in terms of giving the ball away square and somebody running onto it and scoring, it's the bits that we work on in training.

“The fundamentals, if you like, of defending that we failed to execute today.”

The Verdict

It was another really disappointing game for the Robins and one that would leave a really sour taste in the mouths of their supporters.

They'll be hoping to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they face a relegation threatened Luton side at Ashton Gate. In order to keep their top six ambitions alive they have to end this barren run and pick up some more points.

Johnson will be under pressure if they fail to defeat the Hatters this weekend, and he has to make sure his team get the fundamentals right as that is a sign of things starting to go wrong.
